South’s Girls Dominate State Selections Print
Written by Robyn Skene
The Newcastle Herald said it all in its Junior Sports Liftout this week when it said our South’s Lions were roaring with success and who could not agree when our junior girls have dominated the selected Newcastle girls in State teams. It all started back in June when Yasmin Skene( captain) and Jasmine Etheridge were named in the NSW Primary School Girl’s side to compete in the National School’s Challenge at Labrador in Queensland from August 9th to 13th. This will be Yasmin’s second year in the NSW PSSA team while Jasmine will be representing her state for the first time following a remarkable rise to “Fame” It was just 12 months ago when Jasmine was invited by Newcastle’s under 11 coach and South’s junior girl’s convenor, Robyn Skene, to join the representative team for the Kim Small Shield in Tamworth. It was Jasmine’s performance in this tournament that highlighted her potential. She joined South’s at the beginning of this season to play with girls her own age and took up residence in the South’s 2 side as its permanent goalie. Dedication and a willingness to listen and learn from her mentors Josh Kirk and Josh Skene saw her progress rapidly and gain selection in the Hunter PSSA team that won the state title in Lithgow….. AND an unbelieveable exhibition in the semi-final and final of the championships gained her selection in the state side. Well done Jassie!!!! Our Under 15 year olds were next to step up to the plate in the Northern Half State Championships in Taree where Estelle Hughes and Mariah Williams gained selection in the State Squad. This was followed by a High Performance Camp in Newcastle where 35 of the state’s best lined up under the watchful eyes of the NSW selectors. But neither girl had any worries as they displayed their true talents and were named in the NSW team that will travel to Darwin later this year. Mariah is in her first year with Souths after her family ‘migrated’ from Parkes. She had represented NSW in Under 13 two years ago and is certainly a wonderful acquisition to our club. Then, just last weekend, another of our “star” juniors, Mikala Fulmer won a spot in the NSW Under 13 team for the National Invitational Tournament in Maryborough in October. This will be Mikala’s second year as a state representative after playing for NSW PSSA last year. South’s would also like to congratulate Georgia Perkins from the same AR team as Mikala, Yasmin and Jasmine, for her selection in the NSW Squad but unfortunately an untimely injury in the state championships didn’t help her cause. Still, she should feel extremely proud of being recognized by the selectors as not to many players receive such rewards. South’s are certainly proud of her achievement. South’s would also like to congratulate Rebecca Ward of the Central Wests Club for her selection in the NSW Under 13 girls team. Rebecca was named player of the tournament at the recent NSW Northern Half State championships held here in Newcastle…..Well done Rebecca!!. And well done girls…………five out of the six Newcastle players to gain state honours in 2010…we must be doing something right.
